The magnetic tumbler uses a fundamentally different finishing mechanism from all other mass finishing machines: instead of vibration or rotation, it uses a rotating electromagnetic field to drive stainless steel pins at high speed through the liquid-submerged parts. The three design elements below determine the practical outcome.
The IVC series uses an electromagnetic drive rather than a permanent magnet. The rotating magnetic field causes thousands of stainless steel pins (typically 0.5×5 mm) to agitate at high frequency through the liquid in the processing trough, making contact with all exposed surfaces simultaneously — including internal threads, blind holes, undercuts and filigree details that vibratory media cannot reach. The magnetic field speed is variable, allowing the operator to adjust pin agitation intensity to match part material and target surface finish. The container holds only water and polishing compound; no abrasive media is required.
Magnetic tumbling is a burnishing process, not an abrasive one. The stainless steel pins do not remove material — they work by plastic deformation of microscopic surface asperities, compressing them to create a smooth, bright surface. The practical consequence is that part dimensions are not altered during processing. This makes the magnetic tumbler the correct choice for precision-machined components, dental parts, and jewelry where tolerances must be maintained exactly. Ra reduction from 0.8 μm to 0.25 μm is achievable in 20 minutes on brass — with no measurable material removal.
The IVC series covers seven models from IV-C250 (3 kg processing weight, 0.55 kW) to IV-C700 (32 kg, 5.5 kW). Model selection is driven by the weight of parts processed per batch. Small models (IV-C250 to IV-C350) suit jewelry workshops, dental labs and prototype finishing. Mid-range models (IV-C450 to IV-C500) handle small hardware, fasteners and precision components in batch production. The IV-C600 and IV-C700 are production-scale machines for continuous shift operation. All models share the same operating principle and pin type — process parameters transfer directly when scaling up.
The IVC series magnetic tumbler is a finishing machine that uses a rotating electromagnetic field to drive stainless steel pins through water-submerged parts at high frequency. It is categorised as a burnishing machine rather than an abrasive finishing machine — the pins do not remove material, they compress surface micro-peaks to produce a smooth, bright surface without altering part dimensions.
The key difference from vibratory and centrifugal finishing is reach. Vibratory and barrel machines rely on media tumbling against external part surfaces. The magnetic pin action works in all directions simultaneously, including inside threaded holes, undercuts, blind bores and filigree structures that media cannot enter. This makes the magnetic tumbler the standard choice for small precision parts, dental components, intricate jewelry and miniature hardware where internal surface quality matters as much as external finish.
Typical applications include:
– Jewelry (gold, silver, brass, titanium) — rings, chains, pendants with fine detail
– Dental and orthodontic components — brackets, implant abutments, instruments
– Precision screws, fasteners and miniature hardware
– Watch components and eyeglass frames
– Electronic connectors and small contact parts
– Medical instruments requiring bright, smooth surfaces without dimensional change
Processing time is 10–30 minutes per batch depending on part material and target finish. The machine uses only water and polishing compound — no abrasive media to replace or dispose of. Pin life is long (typically 500–1,000 hours of operation) and pins are separated from parts magnetically at end of cycle, making cleanup straightforward.

Magnetic tumblers are best suited for small non-ferrous metal parts such as gold, silver, brass, stainless steel, and titanium. They are ideal for delicate items like jewelry, dental implants, and tiny precision components.
The machine uses a rotating magnetic field to spin tiny stainless steel pins inside a container, gently polishing parts from all angles—even hard-to-reach inner surfaces.
No. Magnetic tumbling is a non-abrasive process that preserves the dimensions and fine details of your parts while improving surface luster.
Most cycles take between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the material and desired finish.
Yes. The gentle action makes it ideal for intricate items without risk of deformation or clogging.
Regularly clean the container, check the condition of the magnetic pins, and avoid overloading the chamber. Proper care ensures consistent performance.
A vibratory finisher uses abrasive or burnishing media that tumbles against part surfaces through bowl vibration. It is effective for batch processing of parts with accessible surfaces, and handles deburring, edge rounding and polishing across all part sizes from small to large.
A magnetic tumbler uses stainless steel pins driven by a rotating electromagnetic field through liquid-submerged parts. It is non-abrasive — no material is removed — and the pin action reaches internal threads, blind holes, filigree and undercuts that vibratory media cannot enter. Cycle times are short (10–30 minutes) but batch capacity is small (3–32 kg per batch).
Choose magnetic tumbler when: parts are small with internal features; dimensional change is not acceptable; you need mirror-bright finish quickly; parts include dental, jewelry or precision hardware components.
Choose vibratory finisher when: parts are larger or simpler in geometry; batch volume is high; deburring and edge rounding are the primary goal; media abrasion is acceptable.
The standard pin for most applications is 0.5 mm diameter × 5 mm length stainless steel. Smaller diameter pins (0.3 mm × 3 mm) are used for very fine filigree and small internal threads where larger pins cannot enter. Larger pins (0.8 mm × 6 mm or 1.0 mm × 8 mm) are used for heavier parts or when more burnishing energy is needed.
Pin life depends on the parts being processed and the liquid compound used. Typical pin service life is 500–1,000 operating hours with correct compound concentration. Signs of pin wear include rounded pin ends and reduced surface brightness on finished parts. Pins should be inspected monthly and replaced as a batch when wear is visible — mixing worn and new pins in the same cycle produces inconsistent results. Inovatec supplies replacement pins in all standard sizes.
The liquid in the magnetic tumbler trough is a mixture of water and polishing compound. The compound serves three functions: it acts as a lubricant between pins and parts (preventing scratching), carries away the microscopic debris from pin contact, and provides a chemical cleaning and brightening action on the metal surface.
Compound selection depends on the part metal: a neutral or mildly alkaline compound is standard for gold, silver and brass jewelry; a stainless steel-specific compound is used for medical and precision hardware. Avoid highly acidic compounds as these accelerate pin corrosion. Compound concentration is typically 2–5% by volume in water. Change the compound solution when it becomes visibly dark or when surface brightness on finished parts decreases — typically every 50–100 operating hours for production machines.
Model selection is based on the total part weight you need to process per batch:
IV-C250 (3 kg, 0.55 kW): desktop model for jewelry workshops and dental labs processing small batches. Suitable for rings, pendants, small brackets.
IV-C300 (5 kg, 0.75 kW): small workshop standard model, good for mixed small parts and fastener batches.
IV-C350 (8 kg, 1.1 kW): mid-range workshop model, handles larger jewelry batches or small precision hardware production runs.
IV-C450 (12 kg, 1.5 kW): entry production model for continuous shift use; suitable for fastener manufacturers and small hardware producers.
IV-C500 (16 kg, 2.2 kW) / IV-C600 (24 kg, 3.7 kW): production-scale machines for manufacturers running multiple shifts.
IV-C700 (32 kg, 5.5 kW): high-volume production, largest model in the range.
All models use the same pin sizes and compound types. If you are uncertain, share your part weight per batch and daily throughput target and we will confirm the right model within 24 hours.
