Automatic Crankshaft Polishing Machine — high-throughput automated deburring, polishing and surface finishing for crankshafts and camshafts

The automatic crankshaft polishing machine is a dedicated finishing line for automotive crankshafts and camshafts. Manual polishing of crankshafts is slow, inconsistent and labour-intensive; the journal and pin surfaces that mate with bearings require tight surface roughness tolerances that are difficult to hold without a controlled, repeatable process. This machine replaces manual operations with a fully integrated line: the crankshaft conveying system loads parts automatically, a 2-axis movement deburring and polishing unit processes two shafts simultaneously, and an integrated water circulation and abrasive cleaning system maintains process consistency throughout.

Processing diameter is up to 320 mm with shaft lengths from 500 to 1200 mm — covering the full range of passenger car, light commercial and small industrial crankshafts. The result is consistent surface roughness reduction, improved surface hardness and wear resistance on bearing journals, and a clean, polished finish ready for assembly or further processing.

  • 2 shafts processed simultaneously — doubles throughput vs single-station setups
  • 2-axis movement — full coverage of complex crankshaft geometry in one pass
  • Crankshaft conveying line — automated loading and unloading, minimal operator handling
  • Integrated water circulation and abrasive online cleaning — consistent process chemistry throughout the run
  • Compound dosing system — automatic compound delivery maintains chemistry balance
  • Improves surface hardness and wear resistance — not just cosmetic polishing

How the automatic crankshaft polishing line works

Crankshafts are loaded onto the conveying line and fed automatically into the polishing unit. The 2-axis movement system brings abrasive media into contact with all journal and pin surface geometries without manual repositioning. Two shafts run simultaneously in the same cycle. The water circulation system maintains compound concentration; the abrasive online cleaning system removes swarf and breakdown debris to keep media performance stable. After polishing, shafts are conveyed out for rinsing and downstream processing.

StageWhat happens
1. LoadCrankshafts placed on the conveying line; abrasive lifting device positions media
2. Polish2-axis movement deburring and polishing unit processes two shafts simultaneously
3. CirculateWater circulation and compound dosing maintain process chemistry; abrasive online cleaning removes swarf
4. Rinse & exitPolished shafts conveyed out; rinsing stage removes compound residue before downstream handling

Who this machine is built for

Automotive parts manufacturers processing crankshafts at volume — the 2-shaft simultaneous capacity and automated conveying line are designed for production environments, not job-shop occasional use. Consistent, repeatable surface roughness across every shaft is the output.

Engine remanufacturing facilities — remanufactured crankshafts must meet the same surface finish specifications as new parts to achieve rated bearing life. The controlled 2-axis polishing process restores journal surfaces to specification without the variability of manual polishing.

OEM suppliers to automotive assemblers — crankshaft polishing is part of the finishing specification for new engines. The integrated line — conveying, polishing, water management, compound dosing — supports the throughput and consistency requirements of supply chain production schedules.

Automatic Crankshaft Polishing Machine – FAQs

1. What is the advantage of 2-axis movement in crankshaft polishing?
Crankshafts have complex geometry: main journals, pin journals and counterweights at different radii and angular positions. 2-axis movement allows the polishing unit to follow this geometry and maintain consistent contact pressure and abrasive engagement across all surface features in a single automated cycle, without repositioning or multiple setups. This is what delivers consistent surface roughness across every journal on every shaft.
2. What surface finishes can the machine achieve?
The machine is designed for deburring and surface roughness reduction on crankshaft journals. It improves surface smoothness, surface hardness and wear resistance — the three properties that determine bearing journal life. The specific Ra values achievable depend on the starting condition of the shaft, the abrasive media selected and the cycle parameters. Contact us with your current Ra and target Ra; we can advise on media selection and cycle configuration.
3. Does the machine also process camshafts?
Yes. The machine is configured for crankshafts as the primary application, but camshafts fall within the same geometry class — rotating shaft with journals, lobes and complex surface features. Inovatec has experience with camshaft polishing applications using this type of automated line. Specify your camshaft dimensions when enquiring.
4. What abrasive media does the machine use?
The media container holds the abrasive media used in the polishing process. Ceramic or plastic tumbling media of appropriate shape and grade is selected based on the target surface finish and shaft material. The abrasive online cleaning system removes metal swarf and media breakdown debris during operation to maintain consistent media performance. Inovatec supplies a full range of compatible media.
5. How does the water purification system work?
The water purification system (0.8 kW motor) filters the process water to remove swarf, spent abrasive particles and compound residue, allowing the water to be recirculated rather than discharged after each cycle. This reduces water consumption and compound usage, and prevents contamination build-up that would degrade polishing performance over time.
6. Can the system be customised for non-standard shaft sizes?
The standard configuration processes shafts up to 320 mm diameter and 500–1200 mm length. Custom configurations for larger diameters or different length ranges are available. Specify your shaft dimensions when enquiring.
7. What installation requirements does the machine have?
The main machine is 2750×1970×2920 mm; the full system including control cabinet, water purification and media container requires a larger floor area. At 4500 kg gross weight, crane or forklift access is needed for installation. Three-phase power supply is required. Contact us for a full installation requirements document before ordering.
8. Do you provide export packing and documentation?
Yes. We handle standard export packing and shipping documentation for delivery to 60+ countries. Contact us to confirm lead time and freight options for your destination.
