Your Cerakote-coated parts are incredibly durable, but they look dull and unfinished. This lack of shine can hurt your product’s appeal. A simple vibratory polishing process can fix this.
To polish Cerakote, use a tub vibratory finisher with non-abrasive zirconia ball media and a polishing compound. This method gently burnishes the surface to a high gloss in about 20 minutes per part. It safely achieves a premium shine without damaging the protective ceramic coating.
Getting that perfect shine on a tough coating like Cerakote is not always simple. You need the right method to avoid damaging the finish. Let me walk you through a specific challenge a customer brought to me, and how we found the perfect solution together.
1. What’s the Big Challenge with Polishing Cerakote Parts?
You’ve applied a tough Cerakote finish, but it looks flat and unappealing. Traditional polishing methods risk damaging the very coating you worked hard to apply. Understanding the coating is key.
The main challenge is achieving a high gloss without removing or damaging the thin, hard ceramic layer. Cerakote is for durability, not shine. Aggressive polishing can strip the coating, while gentle methods may not be effective enough. The key is finding the right balance of media and machine.
Jet Hot+Headers cerakote polishing with vibratory finishing
A while back, a customer from the US named Mike came to me with this exact problem. He manufactures custom exhaust pipes for high-end motorcycles. His products were strong and heat-resistant thanks to a perfect Cerakote application, but they looked dull. In the custom automotive world, appearance is just as important as performance. A flat, lifeless finish was a major issue for his brand. Mike knew that any aggressive buffing or old-school grinding would easily destroy the coating he relied on for protection. He couldn’t afford to experiment and ruin his valuable parts. We needed a process that would create a shine by polishing the surface, not by cutting into it.
2. The Core Problem: Durability vs. Aesthetics
Cerakote is a polymer-ceramic composite coating. It is incredibly hard, but also very thin, often measured in microns. Its main purpose is to protect the part from corrosion, abrasion, and heat. A brilliant shine is not part of its natural character. The challenge is to change the surface texture to reflect light without removing any of this thin protective layer.
3. The Risks of Improper Polishing
We had to be very careful. Using the wrong approach could lead to several problems:
Risk
Description
Abrasive Damage
Using standard cutting media, even fine ones, can scratch, thin, or completely remove the coating.
Uneven Finish
Hand polishing is not practical for complex shapes and often results in an inconsistent, blotchy appearance.
Part-on-Part Damage
Tossing multiple exhaust pipes into a traditional tumbler would cause them to hit each other, leading to chips and dents.
For Mike’s unique and valuable exhaust pipes, these risks were not acceptable. We needed a controlled, repeatable, and safe solution.
4. Why Use Zirconia Balls and a Tub Vibratory Machine?
You need to polish a delicate coating without causing damage. The wrong machine or media can destroy your parts, wasting time and money. A tub vibratory finisher with zirconia balls is the answer.
We suggest a tub vibratory machine because it lets you process parts individually, preventing them from hitting each other. Zirconia balls are a non-abrasive, high-density media that burnishes the surface to a high gloss without removing the Cerakote coating. This combination is both safe and efficient.
cerakote ceramic coated parts polishing
After I examined Mike’s exhaust pipe, I knew a standard vibratory bowl was not the right tool. The risk of part-on-part damage was too high. My recommendation was a tub-style vibratory finisher. These machines are long and rectangular, which allows you to place a single, large part like an exhaust pipe inside. We could then surround it with media, completely protecting it from impacts. The machine’s linear vibration creates a gentle but effective polishing action that flows around the entire part.
Next, we had to choose the media. This was the most critical decision. We needed something that would polish, not cut. I recommended 3-4mm zirconia balls. Zirconia is an amazing material for this job. It is a type of ceramic, so it’s very hard and dense, but its surface is perfectly smooth. Instead of scratching the Cerakote, the weight and smooth surface of the zirconia balls peen, or burnish, the coating. This action cold-works the surface on a microscopic level, closing its porosity and making it highly reflective. We paired this with a lubricating and cleaning compound to help the process run smoothly.
The result is a transformation from a dull, matte surface to a brilliant, semi-gloss or high-gloss finish. The process smooths the Cerakote surface, increasing its light reflectivity. The final part looks premium and professionally finished, all achieved in around 20 minutes without damaging the coating.
We were ready to test the solution for Mike. We carefully placed one of his Cerakote-coated exhaust pipes into the tub vibratory machine. We then filled the tub with the 3-4mm zirconia balls and added the polishing compound. I set the timer for 20 minutes and started the machine. Even after doing this for years, I still get excited to see the final result. When the cycle finished, we rinsed the part and dried it off. The difference was stunning. The dull, flat surface was completely gone. In its place was a beautiful, deep, and consistent shine that made the part look like a piece of jewelry.
The exhaust pipe now had the best of both worlds: the extreme toughness of Cerakote with a premium, high-end look. We inspected the part closely. The surface was perfectly smooth to the touch, and the gloss was uniform across the entire pipe, even in the tight bends and around the welds. Most importantly, the Cerakote coating was fully intact. There were no scratches, no thin spots, and no damage at all.
